It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael Bailey, a cherished brother and dedicated friend. Michael was an esteemed member of the United States Air Force, who left us on April 12, 2026, at the age of 44 in Johnson City, Tennessee. Born on December 29, 1981, in Johnson City, Michael’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to service, both in his military career and his personal life.

A graduate of Unicoi County High School, Class of 2000, Michael’s pursuit of excellence took him into the United States Air Force shortly thereafter. He flourished in his role, becoming a Staff Sergeant and specializing in the maintenance of turboshaft propulsion systems and auxiliary power plant systems supporting the MH-53J/M Pave Low special operations helicopters. His dedicated service included five deployments, during which he showed extraordinary bravery in operations such as Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity, including direct missile attacks.

Michael was not only a skilled airman but also a mentor and leader, known for his engaging personality and fierce loyalty to friends and those he considered family. Those who knew him remembered him fondly as a “bad ass” with a heart of gold—funny, generous, honest, and considerate. His interests were varied; he cherished the tranquility of hunting and fishing, the challenge of weightlifting, and the spirited combat of MMA fighting. He found peace on his mountain and often took the time to engage in meaningful conversations with God, reflecting his deep faith in Christian belief.

Beyond his military career, Michael left a lasting impact through his humanitarian efforts, dedicating time to a nonprofit organization focused on dog rescue and assisting veterans struggling with PTSD. His contributions extended far beyond his professional accolades, which included multiple awards such as the Iraqi Campaign Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Air Force Achievement Medals, two Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Device, Air Force Good Conduct, National Defense Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Medals.

Michael’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the lives he touched. He is remembered not just for his service and achievements but for the love and joy he brought into the lives of those around him. In his memory, we celebrate a life that inspired many and a spirit that will never be forgotten. A memorial service will be held to honor Michael’s remarkable life. Details to follow. In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to organizations supporting veterans, PTSD, and animal rescue which are causes Michael held close to his heart.

As we reflect on the life of Michael Bailey, may we remember his unwavering spirit and the laughter he shared, forever cherishing the moments spent with him.
