Matt Sturtevant served in the US Air Force and was killed on September 3, 1998, at age 39, in one of the worst training accidents in recent Air Force history. All 12 crew members aboard a pair of rescue squadron helicopters were killed early Friday when their HH-60G helicopters crashed in the darkness during that training accident. He served as a gunner, alongside other victims including pilots, flight engineers, and para-rescuemen from the crash.
He’s buried at Elgin Cemetery in Elgin, Union County, Oregon.
